The NASW code of ethics outlines in 6.01-6.04 the role in which social workers contribute to society.
Social workers ethical responsibilities include social welfare policy, public participation, social and political action. Professor Williams stressed the importance of learning the history of social welfare policy. Without a complete understanding a worker is not able to effectively implement changes in the delivery of social welfare policies. As a student of Social Welfare policy analysis I studied various ideologies, theories, and paradigms.
My approach to analyzing social welfare policy has been centered around following current events, gathering and studying data, and reading journals on legislative agendas. As the host of "Social Work Next," an video recorded mini series covering current social polices, I debated and analyzed topics such as immigration, health care reform, and gay marriages. I have also analyzed polices and programs that impact foster care youth, incarcerated persons, child welfare, homeless persons, ethnic minorities, and geriatric populations. Throughout my academic and professional work experience I have participated on various interdisciplinary teams. I have also studied the policy and research process. My passion has lead me to promote human rights and social justice in Southern Sudan. I currently serve on the board for Door of Hope, an organization dedicated to helping refugee youth.
Reendowed Political Scientist Aaron Wildavsky described policy analysis as an "art and craft." As an aspiring social entrepreneur I plan to create innovative solutions to address social problems that I may encounter while in the field. I have provided several examples that illustrates my student engagement in policy practice for the advancement of social and economic empowerment of others.
