Competency 9: Respond to Contexts that Shape Practice


Throughout my work experiences, academic career, service learning, and internship opportunities I have developed an eclectic knowledge base. The following information is a detailed description of how I have successfully responded to contexts that shape practice. Inform: As a student advocate and leader I have shared valuable information with fellow students and clients. I also inform myself on current polices and social issues so that I may be aware of how it may affect my community. Resourceful: Perhaps one of my strongest skills is my ability in assessing a clients' need and connecting the client to resources. Although I have only lived in Nashville for four years I have committed myself to become familiar  with community resources. I have also built relationships with many agencies and nonprofit organizations throughout the city.Proactive: Throughout  my academic career I have sought a variety of service learning experiences outside of class assignments. Each school semester I have volunteered with nonprofits around the city. Knowledgeable: I have become familiar with human services agencies. I have also collected resource guides and literature from various agencies. I feel very comfortable making client referrals and brokering services. Value: I have  respect for an individuals self determination and dignity. Because of my deep value of human relationships I constantly work towards building trust and confidentiality with others. Skillful: I have had experience with using the Generalists Intervention Model. My field practice experience has increased my self efficacy. I have use my skills to successfully engage, assess, implement interventions, and evaluate individuals. Lead: As a member and advisor for the TSU Social Work Club I have had numerous opportunities to lead and organize community services projects. I have practice the School motto by thinking about social issues that affect my community, working towards finding solutions, and serving those who I come in contact with on my journey.
