In order to assist in the planned changed process generalist must have knowledge of an individual biological, psychological, and social environment. In social work practice Professor Butler taught the importance of using a holistic approach when assessing, planning interventions, and evaluating clients. The Person-in-environment (PIE) perspective is practical because everyone is connected to systems. Before interventions are implemented each system must be taking into consideration. I have observed how lack of basic human needs can dictate and influence an individuals behavior. I have also gained a deeper knowledge of how social systems can promote or deter individuals from maintaining a certain quality of life. As a student I have had studied systems and ecological perspective. I will provide examples of how I have successfully incorporated the PIE method in working with individuals, families, and organizations.
